Maleme (“maa-le-may”) lies on the old coast road about 20km the west of Chania. Having passed through the lively resort of Platanias, Maleme, and its associated villages, make for a much quieter and more sophisticated holiday, retaining their Cretan character and are not so commercialised. The Maleme area consists mainly of Maleme itself and the villages of Gerani and Tavronitis.

Driving through one could easily miss the resort, the tourist area is by the beach, the main road being fairly uninspiring and ‘urban’: look for the roads going the 100m seaward.
